The Rugby League statue at Wembley

Rugby League celebrated its 120th birthday in fitting fashion today as a statue commemorating some of the game’s greatest players was unveiled at Wembley Stadium.

The statue depicts five legends of the game, Billy Boston MBE, Alex Murphy OBE and Martin Offiah MBE as well as the late greats Gus Risman and Eric Ashton MBE.

Speaking to WembleyStadium.com, one member of that quintet Martin Offiah, said he was deeply humbled to see his 1994 wonder try against Leeds immortalised at the national stadium .

“It’s a tremendous honour,” he said.

“When I slumped to my knees after rounding Alan Tate and I knew at that time I’d achieved something special.

“But never did I imagine that pose would be depicted by a statue outside Wembley Stadium.

“I am going to be remembered for scoring that try in 1994 and I am quite happy about that.

“If you can be remembered for one moment you’re doing alright!”

Offiah admits that being immortalised at the scene of many of his greatest triumphs makes the tribute even more meaningful.

“I’ve got a lot of affection for this stadium, some of my greatest moments happened here,” he said.

“I only lost here once, I tasted the bitter side in 1999, the last final at the old Wembley Stadium playing for London Broncos but I still got to score that day.

“I’ve also been to see a few fantastic concerts here such as Take That and Oasis,” he continued with a beaming grin.

“I’m looking forward to bringing my kids here and my kids bringing their kids and so on.

“After all, how long does a bronze statue stand outside Wembley? It will be here a lot longer than I will.”

Offiah believes the statue as a whole is a triumph and is full of praise for the artist.

“It is a fitting testimony to a sport born out of extreme socio-economic times,” he said.

“The work Stephen Winterburn has done bringing that statue to life is fantastic.”
