Bikers come together to mark 50th anniversary of iconic moment at Wembley Stadium

A group of motorcycle fanatics descended on Wembley Stadium today (May 27) to mark the 50th anniversary of legendary daredevil rider Evel Knievel’s attempted bus jump at the venue.

The 60 strong group were joined by members of Evel’s family including eldest son Kelly and daughters Tracey and Alisha. They arrived on an original 1970’s London bus – similar to the one used in the daring stunt back in 1975.

The stop at Wembley Stadium was organised by the RIDE Cymru motorcycle group. Lead organiser Jason Lewis said: “We have an annual ride out every year to celebrate the great man’s stunt. As it’s the 50th anniversary we wanted to do something special so we thought why not plan a trip to Wembley Stadium where the actual jump took place.

“It’s extra special to have some of Evel’s family here. They have been staying with us in Wales the last week and came down here today to be at Wembley.”

In 1975, Evel Knievel, who was known all over the world for his eye-catching stunts on a motorbike, attempted to jump over 13 London buses at Wembley Stadium. He crashed on landing, fracturing his pelvis and breaking his hand, in front of a crowd of 90,000 people.

The American performer attempted more than 75 motorcycle jumps, to large crowds across the world, throughout his career. The jump at Wembley Stadium was his only one in the UK.

Kelly Knievel said: “It was great to come to Wembley Stadium and see the site of one of the great cycle jumps of all-time. Dad was always the showman and always was thinking of different things he could jump over. When he came to the UK it just had to be London buses.”

The jump at Wembley Stadium took place on May 26, 1975.
