Vernon and Mangold excited by huge Wembley clash
The NFL International Series returns in style at Wembley Stadium connected by EE this weekend as the Jets and the Dolphins bring their long rivalry to the national stadium.
Dating back as far as the late 60s and early 70s when the sides were two of gridiron’s dominant forces - then playing in the AFL - their rivalry has ensured fixtures have remained hotly contested ever since.
Now, for the first time, Wembley will get to experience this special encounter, and the players are as excited about clashing in London as the British public are to be witnessing it.
“I’m very excited, it’s going to be a neat experience,” said New York Jets’ Nick Mangold.
“I’ve heard good things about these games, so I’m excited to be a part of one.”
Olivier Vernon was in the Miami Dolphins squad which beat Oakland Raiders at Wembley last season.
And he is delighted to get another opportunity to experience the special atmosphere under the arch.
“Last year was my first time over here and it felt like we were back home,” he told WembleyStadium.com.
“The fans were just how the fans are back home, it was crazy.
“It was electric in the stadium and it felt like a play-off game really.
“I’m glad to be coming back to play at Wembley Stadium.”
The NFL International Series has been visiting Wembley since 2007 and Mangold is pleased with how the profile of the game is growing in this country.
“It seems like NFL in the UK is growing very rapidly,” he said.
“The fans can expect hard hitting, fast paced action.”
The Dolphins and Jets players will perform in front of a packed house on Sunday but what do they make of the venue for one of the biggest games of their season?
“Wembley is right up there with some of the big stadiums in America,” Vernon added.
“When those fans get going they are pretty loud.
“It can compete with the stadiums we have back in the states.”
