Wembley receives triple award
Wembley Stadium connected by EE, as part of The Football Association, achieves triple certification to Carbon Trust standards: the first sporting venue to receive ‘the treble’.
The FA’s operations including Wembley Stadium and St. George’s Park have been certified to the Carbon Trust Water Standard and Carbon Trust Waste Standard and re-certified to the Carbon Trust Carbon Standard. The first sporting organisation to achieve ‘the treble’, The FA is also one of the first ten organisations to achieve all three standards (others include Marks & Spencer and PwC).
Roger Maslin the Managing Director of Wembley said “We are delighted to be the first stadium to achieve triple certification. This is testament to the hard work put in by our Green Team and the huge achievements made at the Stadium since 2007.”
Simon Smith, Stadium Services Associate Director said “It has been fantastic to preside over this triple environmental certification in my first twelve months at Wembley. Together with our certification to ISO 14001, we have achieved a huge amount in the last year and look forward to continued environmental progress.”
This achievement is thanks to the hard work carried out by the Wembley ‘Green Team’ which has brought many benefits to the business. Recycling rates on event days have reached highs of 86%. Electricity consumption was reduced by 32% from 2007-2012 which it is calculated that, along with reductions in gas consumption, has saved the business close to £4,000,000. 100% of the Stadium’s electricity comes from a renewable energy tariff and is a zero waste-to-landfill venue. Wembley has long since moved beyond trying to just divert waste from landfill and now aims to divert waste even from the waste-to-energy plant through re-use of assets. Wembley has installed a water recycling system for cleaning maintenance equipment and installed PIR control and adjusted push button taps in public toilets to minimise water use.
The Stadium Sustainability Manager James Huartson says: “Achieving triple certification is yet another proud achievement to add to our growing collection of environmental awards and certifications. At the end of 2013 we were also certified to ISO 14001. We’ve worked hard to achieve these reductions and there is still more being done. Already this year we have beaten our energy targets for quarter 1 and our diversion rates are even better than last year’s.”
Wembley Stadium is committed to delivering more environmental improvements to build on the current success and to ensure that the Stadium maintains its position as a world leader in stadium management. Following in the footsteps of the London 2012 Olympics, this year Wembley Stadium has committed to implementing ISO 20121, the international standard for event sustainability management systems.
