Despite winning many titles, the best known moment of Henry Cooper’s career came 50 years ago today at Wembley when he floored Muhammad Ali, then known as Cassius Clay.

On the night Cooper had found Clay to be a frustratingly elusive opponent but, in the dying seconds of the fourth round, felled Clay with "Enry's 'Ammer", his trademark left hook.

Unfortunately for Cooper, in an alleged violation of the rules, Clay’s trainer Angelo Dundee used smelling salts and also opened a small tear in his gloves to delay the start of the next round

When the fifth round eventually started a revived Clay effectively countered Cooper and opened a severe cut under his eye with a hard right, forcing the referee to stop the fight.

Clay later said on British television that Cooper "had hit him so hard that his ancestors in Africa felt it".
