England v Scotland is the oldest international football fixture in history and the next instalment comes this Wednesday.

Since their first meeting in Glasgow in 1872 the nations have met 110 times, with Wembley Stadium playing host to 30.

There has been many memorable encounters over the years, with stunning victories for both countries, but here we take a partisan look at England’s best ever victories over their rivals at Wembley.

England 7-2 Scotland, 1955
Not since 1934 had England managed to beat Scotland at Wembley but they finally broke the hoodoo with a vengeance.

England’s Dennis Wilshaw opened the scoring in the first minute and Nat Lofthouse made it 2-0 after seven minutes before Lawrence Reilly pulled one back for Scotland. Goals from Don Revie and a second for  Nat Lofthouse made it 4-1 at half time.

The second half belonged to Dennis Wilshaw as he scored on 70, 73 and 83 minutes to make it four for the match in total. Tommy Docherty pulled one back for Scotland from a free kick with five minutes to go but it was little consolation.

England 9-3 Scotland, 1961
9-3 sounds more like a rugby score than a football score and to this date it remains England’s biggest ever win in the fixture. England led 3-0 after 20 minutes thanks to two goals from Jimmy Greaves and one from Bobby Robson.

Scotland pulled two goals back quickly after half time but Bryan Douglas and Bobby Smith restored the three goal lead before Scotland pulled another goal back on 75 minutes to make it 5-3.

Any hopes of a Scotland comeback were quickly quashed by a quick brace from Johnny Haynes before Jimmy Greaves completed his hat trick and Bobby Smith made it 9-3 with five minutes to go.

England 4-1 Scotland, 1969
The final crucial game in the 1969 Home International Championship saw the holders and world champions England facing the only team that could top the table in their stead, Scotland. England needed only a draw against the Scots who knew they had to win.

England hadn’t beaten Scotland at home since the famous 9-3 game in 1961 but in the end England cruised to a 4-1 victory. Martin Peters and Geoff Hurst has put England 2-0 up after 20 minutes but Colin Stein scored two minutes before half time to bring Scotland right back into the game.

However Geoff Hurst scored a penalty after 60 minutes and Martin Peters wrapped up the scoring four minutes later.

England 5-1 Scotland, 1975
1975 saw another decider between England and Scotland in the final game of the Home International Championship but this time Scotland only needed a draw while England had to win. 

England got off to the best possible start with Gerry Francis netting after only six minutes before Kevin Beattie doubled their advantage a minute later. Colin Bell made it three after 40 minutes but a Bruce Rioch penalty before half time gave Scotland hope. However second half goals from Gerry Francis and David Johnson completed the rout.

England 3-1 Scotland, 1979
Yet another Home International Championship decider saw Scotland take the lead after 21 minutes through John Wark but a goal from Peter Barnes right on half time made it 1-1 at the break.

A strong second half performance from England was rewarded with goals from Steve Coppell and Kevin Keegan.

England 2-0 Scotland, 1996
England and Scotland hadn’t played each other since they stopped playing annually in 1989 so this meeting in the group stages of the 1996 European Championships was highly anticipated.

England took the lead after 53 minutes through an Alan Shearer header and looked in control of the game until Scotland were awarded a penalty with 14 minutes to go but Gary McAllister's kick was saved by David Seaman.

A few minutes later a piece of individual brilliance from Paul Gascoigne wrapped things up. Using a stunning combination of skill and strength, Gazza flicked the ball over his Rangers team-mate Colin Hendry and volleyed past Andy Goram in the Scotland goal.
