850,000 tickets went on sale 9am and throughout the day the band added a futher 11 dates to the tour to cope with demand, bringing the total number of shows, including Ireland, to 25 dates.

Massive demand for the tickets caused phone lines and websites across the country to jam as ticket agents struggled to cope with the unprecedented number of people trying to buy tickets. Ticketmaster alone had 20 million page impressions by early evening and BT said the national telephone network had received between three and four times the normal amount of calls.

The pop icons will play seven nights at Wembley Stadium in early July.
